St. Joseph Tree Service is a complete tree service company. That means you can hire us to get rid of those pesky stumps after you’ve cut down a tree as well! If you’ve ever attempted to remove a stump yourself, you know that it’s not only back-breaking work, it’s also something that takes some know-how.

Our company can dispose of stump in two different ways; by grinding it or by completely removing it from the ground using a tool called a backhoe or something different.

In stump grinding, we grind the stump down so that its top is below the surface of the soil. Then the dirt can be filled it and it can disappear from sight. This means the roots will still be under the ground and will gradually decompose over time. This is a good option if you don’t need to dig up the soil in the vicinity of the old tree to plant something new.

In stump removal, we use a backhoe or similar tools to dig up the stump as well as its roots. You’ll need to do this when you need to remove a tree and then build something over it. Failing to completely remove the roots could compromise the integrity of the structure you’re building. You’ll also need to do this if your intention is to plant something else in the tree’s place. As you can imagine, stump removal is a much more arduous process than stump grinding. As a result, its more expensive than stump grinding.

As such, most homeowners will simply need stump grinding services to remove unsightly stumps from their yards.  We have high quality equipment for this process such as Vermeer or Morbark stump grinders and our tree service technicians have many years of experience doing this. We’ve mastered the art of stump grinding and can get it done quickly and efficiently. When we’re done, no one will ever know there was a tree there.

The type of tree influences the difficulty of stump grinding. Hardwood trees like maples and live oaks are the most difficult to grind while older conifers like cedars and pines are easier. The age of the stump also influences the difficulty of the removal process. Older stumps will be easier than newer ones to remove. Finally, the size is another factor to consider when determining the difficulty of grinding. The bigger the stump, the more difficult the grind – all else being equal.

Here’s a quick overview of our stump grinding process:

• Our technicians begin by digging up loose debris around the stump with a shovel to make the process easier.

• Our team then uses a power saw or sawzall to get the stump as close to the ground as possible

• Then we bring out the stump grinder and begin grinding the stump until its about 6-12 inches below the ground

• We then clean up the area by removing any wood chips or other devbris and fill in the hole.

On average you can expect our team to take 30-90 minutes for stump grinding one stump. Again, the difficulty depends on the size, type of tree and age.

Although stump grinding can make quite a mess, our team makes sure to respect your property and clean up afterwards as much as possible. We aim to please!
